Are you working in a smaller library without the resources necessary to sustain a full-fledged makerspace? Looking for creative ways to reach underserved populations? Come learn how Northfield Public Library, through the Library Services & Technology Act Grant to States Program, sponsored the Minnesota Department of Education, implemented new technology and creative programs by developing a mobile makerspace designed to provide their community with maker tech tools to-go. In this presentation, find out why Northfield Public Library decided that a mobile makerspace was right for them, and how their circulating technology kits provided new opportunities to connect community members. They will also discuss how they tapped in to local interests to guide their application and proposed purchases for the grant funding, how they made connections with underserved populations, and how staff met the challenge to use and promote portable, outreach-friendly, low cost tech tools. Focusing on two easy to use tools, the Ikonart screen-printing kit and the Provisional Press printing press, they will discuss the implementation of their programs; share surprises, successes, and hurdles; and how they have built unexpected bridges in their community.
